Genuine vs OEM vs aftermarket parts: how to choose

Genuine, OEM and aftermarket parts explained in plain terms: what each is, how to choose for your luxury car, and what to ask before a part is fitted.

When a car needs a part, you'll usually hear three terms: genuine, OEM and aftermarket. They aren't the same, and the cheapest isn't always the best choice, or the worst. At GIG, you choose. We explain the options and fit what you decide.

The three types in plain terms

Genuine parts

Parts sold under the car manufacturer's own brand, in the manufacturer's packaging, normally through its official network. They are what the car was designed around.

OEM parts

OEM means "original equipment manufacturer". These are made by the same supplier that produces the part for the car maker, but sold under the supplier's own brand and packaging. The specification can be the same as the genuine part; the label and price often differ.

Aftermarket parts

Parts made by other companies, not as original-equipment supply. Quality ranges widely. Some are well made and designed to match or improve on the original, while others are built to a price. The brand matters.

How to choose

  • Safety-critical parts (brakes, steering, suspension): be cautious and ask for the brand and its specification.
  • Wear items (filters, pads, wipers): good OEM and reputable aftermarket brands are often a sensible option.
  • Newer car under warranty: check your warranty terms before using non-genuine parts.
  • Older car you plan to keep: balance cost against how long you'll own it and how the part is used.
  • Resale: some buyers prefer to see genuine parts and a service history; ask yourself how much that matters to you.
  • Insurance claim: your insurer may have its own requirements, so confirm before work starts. See our insurance claim repair checklist

Questions to ask before a part is fitted

  • Is this genuine, OEM or aftermarket, and what brand and part number?
  • What warranty is there on the part, and on the labour?
  • Can I have an itemised written quote?
  • Can I see the old part afterwards?
  • Is the part available now, or is there a lead time?

Watch out for fake parts

Counterfeit parts exist, especially for popular items. Buy through reputable sources, ask for an invoice that names the brand and part number, and be wary of a price that looks too good to be true.

FAQ

Is OEM the same as genuine?

Not exactly. OEM parts come from the same kind of supplier as genuine parts but are sold under the supplier's own brand. Genuine parts carry the car manufacturer's brand.

Are aftermarket parts always lower quality?

No. Quality varies by brand. Ask the brand and its warranty, and judge the part by those, not just by the label.

Will non-genuine parts affect my warranty?

It depends on your warranty terms. Check them, and ask in writing before fitting if your car is still covered.

Can I choose which type of part is used?

At GIG, yes. We explain the options for your car and the job, and you decide.
